Patients with keratitis (infection of the clear window of the eye) can spend up to 3 months in hospital representing a significant burden on the health system. This project will evaluate the economic impact of different groups of keratitis patients on the health system and investigate modelling of strategies to reduce this burden
This project will use data linkage of the MBS, PBS and hospital coding data bases to determine the economic impact of keratitis to the health system. The impact of different intervention strategies such as earlier presentation of cases, and prophylactic treatment such as oral acyclovir in herpes simplex keratitis will be modelled to better inform healthcare providers and the community.
